altitude, from the Latin
altitudo, height, the angular distance of a celestial body above the
horizon. The angle required in
celestial navigation is that between the centre of the earth and the centre of the body observed. Corrections thus have to be made to the
sextant altitude (the reading shown on the instrument) to obtain the observed altitude, which is that required to work up the
sight, to use the time-honoured phrase. The altitude corrections, as they are called, are given in
nautical almanacs and most nautical tables. They are, for index and any other instrumental error,
dip (for height of eye),
refraction, and, for the sun and moon only (because of their proximity to the earth), a correction for
semi-diameter. The term
computed altitude as used in modern tables of computed altitude and azimuth may be defined as the theoretical altitude of a body at a particular place and time.
