Thetis, one of the
Nereides in Greek legend; she married Peleus and by him became the mother of Achilles. Thetis has been frequently used in many European navies as a ship's name. It was the name of a Royal Navy
submarine which was accidentally sunk in 1938 in Liverpool Bay while on her trials, with heavy loss of life. See also
