Spanish Main, a term much used by writers of romantic stories of the sea to describe the Spanish possessions in America during the 16th–18th centuries. In the strict and early meaning of the word it embraced that part of the mainland of the north-east coast of South America stretching from the Orinoco to the Isthmus of Panama, and the former Spanish mainland possessions bordering the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. But by extension, particularly from the sense in which it was used by the
buccaneers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the term came to mean the Caribbean Sea itself. Thus the meaning changed completely; where originally it referred to the main land, it later came to mean the main sea.
