Poseidon. 1. The Greek god of the sea, known to the Romans as
Neptune. In Greek mythology he was lord and ruler of the sea. He was the son of Cronos and Rhea, and his palace was believed to lie at the bottom of the sea off Aegea in Euboea. His wife Amphitrite was a granddaughter of Titan (Ocean). He was credited with the power of gathering clouds, raising and calming the sea, letting loose
storms, and granting safe voyages. See also
