Oceanus, an influential Greek deity of the sea, son of Coelus (the sky) and Terra (the earth). He married
Tethys, who gave birth to most of the principal rivers together with up to 3,000 daughters who are called
Oceanides after him. According to Homer, he was the father of all the gods, and on that account received frequent visits from the rest of the deities. Oceanus is generally represented as an old man with a long flowing beard sitting upon the
waves of the sea; he presided over every part of the sea, even the rivers being subject to his power. Mariners of the ancient world were deeply reverential in their worship of him, and served with great solemnity a deity to whose care they entrusted themselves when going on any voyage.
