‘Limey’, a name originally used by Americans when referring to a British seaman, though now frequently enlarged to embrace all British people. It originated from the British regulation that all ships registered in the UK were to carry a stock of lime juice on board for issue to the crew as a preventive against
scurvy. For the same reason, British ships were known in the USA as ‘lime-juicers’.
