Gloire, a
frigate of the French Navy, designed by Stanislas Dupuy de Lôme and
launched in 1859. She was the first truly seagoing
ironclad warship in the world, making her appearance a year before the British
Warrior, the first ironclad
battleship in the world. With a displacement of 5,000 tons, the
Gloire was built of oak and had a belt of iron armour 12 centimetres (4.7 in.) thick along her sides. She had, as in all warships of this period, a full rig of mast and sails, with
steam propulsion which gave her a speed of 13.5 knots. She carried a single tier of 36 66-pounder guns of a new design which were breech-loading with rifled barrels and fired shells.
