Flemish horse

Flemish horse, an additional short footrope rigged at the end of those square sail yards carrying reefing sails. It enabled seamen to reach the yard arms, particularly when passing the reef earings. These are short ropes threaded through the reef cringles of square sail and used to secure them to the yards.
