Admiralty midshipman, a term used in the British Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries to describe a midshipman who had served his time (six years) and passed his examination. He was appointed to a ship by
Admiralty order as compared to those rated by the captain and appointed by an admiral. The US Navy's equivalent was ‘Passed Midshipman’.
