wound a wound in the head is the emblem of St Peter the Martyr, a 13th-century Dominican friar and priest born in Verona, who was attacked and killed while travelling from Como to Milan; he was wounded in the head with an axe, while the friar who was with him was stabbed.
Five Wounds the wounds in the hands, feet, and side of the crucified Jesus; devotion to the Five Wounds developed during the Middle Ages, and they are symbolized by five signs of the cross made over the host during a Mass, five grains of incense in a Paschal candle, and five crosses inscribed on an altar.
