roi fainéant any of the later Merovingian kings of France, whose power was merely nominal; the phrase is French, and means literally ‘sluggard king’.
roi soleil a title (‘sun king’) commonly used to designate Louis XIV of France, derived from a heraldic device used by him, and intended to convey his pre-eminence as a ruler.
