intifada the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, beginning in 1987. The word comes from Arabic
intifāḍa ‘an uprising’ (literally ‘a jumping up as a reaction to something’) from
intifaḍa ‘be shaken, shake oneself’.
