the Cross on which Christ was crucified, or a representation of this.

Helena and St
Philip.

Lorraine cross.
cross saltire a cross shaped like the letter X; this is the emblem of St
Andrew.
cross upside down the emblem of St Peter (see
Peter1), who was crucified head downwards.
have one's cross to bear suffer the troubles that life brings. The allusion is to Jesus (or Simon of Cyrene) carrying the Cross to Calvary for the Crucifixion. The expression is also used metaphorically in Matthew 10:38.
