cause the good old cause in 17th century England, applied particularly to Puritan beliefs and principles, as in Milton's
The Ready and Easy Way to Establish a Free Commonwealth (2nd ed., 1660). The usage was later reinforced by Wordsworth.
rebel without a cause a person who is dissatisfied with society but does not have a specific aim to fight for, from the title of a US film, starring James Dean, released in 1955.
