Thucydides (c.455–c.400 bc), Greek historian. He is remembered for his History of the Peloponnesian War, which analyses the origins and course of the war, and includes the reconstruction of political speeches of figures such as Pericles; he fought in the conflict on the Athenian side, but having failed successfully to defend a valuable colony, was condemned in his absence and exiled.
