Stock Exchange a market in which securities are bought and sold; the level of prices in such a market. The term is first used (in the late 18th century) of the London Stock Exchange in Threadneedle Street, which replaced Jonathan's coffee house in Exchange Alley, the former mart for stockjobbers, the archaic term for a principal or wholesaler who dealt only on the Stock Exchange with brokers (now called jobbers).
