Shrove Tuesday the day before
Ash Wednesday, on which people would be
shriven (confessed and absolved) in preparation for Lent. Though named for its former religious significance, it is chiefly marked by feasting and celebration, which traditionally preceded the observance of the Lenten fast.
Shrovetide means Shrove Tuesday and the two days preceding it, when it was formerly customary to attend confession.
