Sephardi a Jew of Spanish or Portuguese descent. They retain their own distinctive dialect of Spanish (Ladino), customs, and rituals, preserving Babylonian Jewish traditions rather than the Palestinian ones of the
Ashkenazim. The name is modern Hebrew, from
sĕp̄āraḏ, a country mentioned in Obadiah 20 (‘the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad’) and taken to be Spain.
