Milky Way a faint band of light crossing the sky, clearly visible on dark moonless nights and discovered by Galileo to be made up of vast numbers of faint stars. It corresponds to the plane of our Galaxy, in which most of its stars are located.

The Milky Way was sometimes named from famous pilgrimage routes; as Walsingham Way and the Way of St James (the road to Santiago de Compostela).
