Āgra, Uttar Pradesh/India Agrabana, Akbarābād Mentioned in the epic Mahābhārata as Agrabana, meaning ‘Paradise’. However, the city may actually be named after the āgra ‘twelve’ vans ‘groves’ of Brijamandala. In his youth, Krishna, the most popular of all Hindu gods, used to enjoy dancing here. The present city was established in 1566 by Akbar, the great Mughal emperor, after whom it was named for a short period. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire (1566–1658) and was annexed by the British in 1803.
