Yevpatoriya, Ukraine Kirkinitida, Eupatoria, Gezlëv, Kozlov A 6th‐century
bc Greek colony, first called Kirkinitida and then Eupatoria, from which the present name comes, after Mithradates VI Eupator, King of Pontus (d. 63 bc). Having been captured by the Ottoman Turks in the 14th century, the name became Gezlëv and this was Russified to Kozlov when Russia annexed the Crimea in 1783. Yevpatoriya was adopted as the sole name in the 19th century.
