Yaoundé, Cameroon Founded as a German military garrison in 1888, the name comes from the Bantu‐speaking Éwondo people, also called the
Yaounde. In 1909 it became the capital of German Kamerun, in 1922 the capital of French Cameroun, and in 1960 the capital of independent Cameroon.
