Weimar, Germany, USA Germany (Thuringia): originally Wimare, an early spelling of Weimar. The name was derived from the Old German
wisa ‘meadow’ and
mari ‘lake’ or ‘spring’. After the First World War the new National Assembly met here in 1919 to draw up a constitution for the new German Republic, henceforth known as the Weimar Republic (1919–33).
