Umm al Qaywayn

Umm al Qaywayn, United Arab Emirates A constituent emirate and its capital with a name popularly said to mean ‘Mother of the Powers’ from the Arabic umm ‘mother’. However, the rest of the name is a dual suffix with an unknown meaning. It was an important dhow‐building centre and these dhows did make Umm al Qaywayn a local sea power.
