Tripoli, Libya, Lebanon, USA 1. Libya: the full name is Ṭarābulus al‐Gharb ‘The Western Tripoli’, an Arabic rendering of the Greek Tripolis. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Oea and enlarged by the Greeks and Romans to become one of the three cities that formed Tripolis (the others were Sabratha and Leptis Magna) from the Greek
treis ‘three’ and
polis. The port of Oea was renamed Triopolis in the 3rd century. Like other towns in North Africa it fell to the Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines before the Arabs arrived in 645. The
al‐
Gharb ‘of the West’ was added after the Ottoman Turkish conquest in 1551 to distinguish the city from what was then the Syrian city (see 2).2. Lebanon: the full name is Ṭarābulus ash‐Shām ‘Tripoli of the Northern (Region)’, in contrast to the Tripoli in Libya, and locally Trâblous. To the famous 14th‐century Arab traveller Ibn Battutah it was known as Atrābulus. It was founded by the Phoenicians, later attracting the Greek name Tripolis because it was divided into three sectors divided by walls. It became the capital of the federation of city‐states—Sidon, Tyre (now Soûr), and Aradus (or Arwād).
