Trento, Trentino‐Alto Adige/Italy Tridentum, Trient The original Latin Tridentum came from
tres ‘three’ and
dens ‘tooth’, a reference to a local mountain with three peaks. It passed to Austria in 1814, hence its German name Trient. It became part of Italy in 1918.
