Tol'yatti

Tol'yatti, Samara/Russia Stavropol′‐na‐Volge, Tol′yattigrad Founded as a fortress in 1738 called ‘Town of the Cross on the (River) Volga’ from the Greek stavros ‘cross’ and polis. This was appropriate since it had been built for newly converted Christians. It was renamed in 1964 on the death of Palmiro Togliatti (1893–1964), the Italian communist leader (1926–64). The spelling was changed to the present form in 1991, although the name sometimes appears as Togliatti(‐on‐the‐Volga).
