Ticino (French and German: Tessin), Italy, Switzerland A tributary of the River Po rising in Switzerland and a canton in Switzerland named after the river. Its name is pre‐Latin in origin and may be linked to the old name for the Adige, Atesis, or with Tesino, a valley in Trentino. The Latin name for the river was Ticinus which gave its name to Ticinum, the original name for
Pavia.
