Tel Aviv‐Yafo

Tel Aviv‐Yafo, Israel Ahuzat Bayit Created in 1950 from the merger of the ancient Canaanite city‐port of Jaffa (Yafo) and its suburb, Tel Aviv. The latter was founded in 1909 as a Jewish settlement called Ahuzat Bayit near the Arab city of Jaffa. Tel Aviv means ‘Hill of Spring’ from the Hebrew tel ‘hill’ and aviv ‘spring(time)’. Tel Aviv is mentioned in the Bible (Ezekiel 3: 15) as Tel‐abib. Tel Aviv was the capital of Israel in 1948 when independence was declared. The following year Jerusalem was declared to be the capital, but this has not yet been accepted by the international community.
