Sozopol, Bulgaria Apollonia, Susopolis A Greek city‐state named Apollonia because the cult of Apollo was followed here and the town had a large statue of Apollo until it was stolen by the Romans in 72 bc. The present name is a version of Susopolis ‘City of Salvation’, from the Greek
sōzein ‘to save’ and
polis, which was adopted when Christianity spread into the region in the 3rd century.
