Simcoe, Ontario/Canada A city and a lake, formerly called Lac aux Claies ‘Hurdle Lake’ from the French
claie ‘hurdle’ because of the fishing weirs at the narrows. The lake was discovered by Samuel de Champlain
† in 1650 and renamed by Colonel (later Lieutenant General) John Graves Simcoe (1752–1806), first lieutenant‐governor of Upper Canada (now Ontario) (1792–96), in honour of his father, Captain John Simcoe, who was killed at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. The city is named after the son.
