Shaṭṭ al‐'Arab, Iraq A river formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers with a name literally meaning ‘Bank of the Arabs’ from
shaṭṭ ‘shore’or ‘bank’; however, here,
shaṭṭ refers to the river itself to mean ‘River of the Arabs’. From a point south‐east of Basra to the Persian Gulf the eastern bank forms the border between Iraq and Iran. The Iranians refer to it as the Arvand Rūd ‘Sublime River’.
