Selkirk, Canada, UK, USA 1. Canada (Manitoba): settled in 1812 and named after Thomas Douglas (1771–1820), 5th Earl of Selkirk, who had founded the Red River Settlement in the area in 1811. He also gave his name to the Selkirk Mountains, largely in British Columbia.2. UK (Scotland): formerly Selechirche and Seleschirche ‘Church by a Hall’ from the Old English sele ‘hall’ or ‘house’ and cirice ‘church’; the second element was replaced by Scottish English kirk.
