Saudi Arabia The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (al‐Mamlakah al‐'Arabīyah as‐Sa'ūdīyah) since 1932. Previously the Kingdom of the Hejaz and Najd which was recognized internationally in 1927 after 'Abd al‐'Azīz ibn Sa᾽ūd (1880–1953), first King of Saudi Arabia (1932–53), had captured the mostly desert region of Najd, the traditional homeland of the Al‐Sa᾽ūd, in 1905 from the rival Ottoman Turkish‐supported Al‐Rashid tribe, and the Hejaz in 1924. In 1926 he was proclaimed King of the Hejaz and Sultan of Najd. Having established the House of Sa᾽ūd as a ruling dynasty, 'Abd al‐'Aziz became known as Ibn Sa᾽ūd. The Arabian peninsula came under the somewhat tenuous control of the Ottoman Turks at the beginning of the 16th century and in due course the Hejaz became an Ottoman province. The
Saudi in the country's name refers to the name of the dynasty whose eponym is Sa᾽ūd ibn Muhammad ibn Muqrin;
Arabia refers to the geographic region, principally the Arabian Peninsula.
