Quezon City, Luzon/Philippines Originally a private estate, it was chosen in 1939 as the site of a new capital by Manuel Luis Quezon y Molina (1878–1944), who became the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth in 1935; he remained president until his death, although he had to go into exile after the Japanese invaded in 1942. The city was the Filipino capital between 1948 and 1976. There are towns called simply Quezon on the islands of Palawan and Alabat.
