Plate, River (Río de la Plata), Argentina‐Uruguay Mar Dolce, Río de Solís The estuary of the Paraná and Uruguay Rivers discovered in 1516 by Juan Díaz de Solís, a Spanish navigator, who called it Mar Dolce ‘Sweet Sea’ before it was briefly named after him following his murder by a local tribe. In 1526 Sebastian Cabot (c.1476–1557), an explorer and navigator, sailing on behalf of Spain on this occasion, diverted a voyage to the Orient, having heard reports of great wealth in the Río de la Plata area. He explored the estuary and the contributory rivers. When he saw the Guaraní wearing silver ornaments he believed the reports to be true and named the estuary the ‘River of Silver’ from the Spanish plata in the hope that it might become just that; unfortunately, the reports were not true, the silver having been imported. See Argentina and La Plata.
