Patna, India, UK India (Bihār): founded in the 5th century
bc as Pāṭaliputra, and capital of the ancient Kingdom of Magadha, its present name is probably simply a shortened version of the original from
pāṭala ‘pale red’ and
putra ‘son’. It might come, however, from the Hindi
paṭṭana ‘city’. It was abandoned in the 7th century, but refounded in 1541 as Patna by Afghans. The name Azimabad, adopted for a period from 1704, was a tribute to 'Azīm al‐Shain, who made his court here; he was a grandson of Aurangzeb, Mughal Emperor of India (1658–1707).
