Orenburg, Russia Chkalov ‘Fort on the (River) Or’. A province and a city founded as a fortress in 1735 where Orsk now is. In 1743 it was moved 150 miles (240 km) down river, although it retained the same name. In 1938–57 it bore the name Chkalov after Valery Chkalov (1904–38), commander of the non‐stop 63‐hour flight in an ANT‐25 from Moscow to Portland, Oregon, USA, via the North Pole in 1937. Chkalov, whose home town this was, was killed in an aviation accident in 1938.
