Oneşti

Oneşti, Romania Gheorghe Gheorghiu‐Dej Built as a new town in 1953 and named after Gheorghe Gheorghiu‐Dej (1901–65), the Romanian Communist leader and president (1961–5). He added Dej to his name after spending eleven years in prison in the town of Dej. Gheorghe Gheorghiu‐Dej was renamed in 1992. The meaning of the first syllable of the present name is not known, but the suffix ‐eşti has the meaning of belonging to a community with the same ancestors.
