Niger, and Nigeria 1. The Republic of Niger (République du Niger) since independence from France in 1960. Previously it was an autonomous republic within the French Community (1958–60) and a French colony (1922–58), having become part of French West Africa in 1904. The land‐locked country takes its name from the Niger River that flows through Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria.2. A river which was called al‐Nil ‘The Nile (River)’ because contemporary Muslim geographers believed that it was linked to the (Egyptian) Nile. They also called it
Nahr al‐Anhur, a misinterpretation of the Tuareg
egereou n‐igereouen, both meaning ‘River of Rivers’. The present name was first seen in 1526 and it has been suggested as having come from the Latin
niger ‘black’ to mean the ‘(River of) the Blacks’. However, it is more likely that the name comes from the second and third parts of the Tuareg name or the similar Berber
gher‐
