Negro River, South America Three rivers have this name: one in Argentina, another that rises in Brazil and flows into Uruguay, and the third which is one of the major rivers of South America. It rises in Colombia as the Guianía and takes the name Negro when it enters Brazil, later joining the Amazon. The forests around the river periodically flood and as the flood waters recede organic matter washes into the river and gives the water its dark colour; hence the name ‘Black River’ from the Portuguese
negro ‘black’.
