Muscovy (Moskoviya), Moscow/Russia A historic principality founded in the 13th century by Prince Daniel, the youngest son of St Alexander Nevsky (
c.1200–63). It was named after Moscow, then a fortified settlement at its centre at the confluence of the Moscow and Neglinka Rivers. The Muscovite princes gradually extended their authority territorially, but it was not until the 17th century that the name Russia was adopted.
