Medicine Hat, Alberta/Canada A community grew up round a Mounted Police post in 1882 which, according to a local legend, was named as a result of a Cree medicine man losing his hat here as he fled from Blackfoot warriors. The ‘medicine’, however, may actually come from wakan ‘holy’, ‘mysterious’, or ‘unusual’.
