The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg (Luxemburgian), Grand‐Duché de Luxembourg (French), Grossherzogtum Luxemburg (German) since 1815, although William I (1772–1843), King of the Netherlands (1815–40), was allowed to take the title of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and it remained within the Netherlands as part of the German Confederation until 1866, although having autonomy from 1839; it became independent in 1867. Previously annexed to France (1795–1814), part of the Austrian Netherlands (1714–95), and of the Spanish Netherlands (1506–1714) apart from a period of French rule (1684–97). The county of Luxembourg became a duchy in 1354. Luxembourg, also called Letzeburg, is the name of the capital city, originally Lucilinburhuc ‘Little Castle’, which originated as a Roman castle and which, when acquired in 963 by the Count of Arlette, constituted a new political entity from which the city, and the surrounding territory, grew.2. Belgium: a province in the region of Wallonia since 1831 when the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was divided.
