La Roche‐sur‐Yon, Pays de la Loire/France Roca super Eon, Napoléon‐Vendée, Bourbon‐Vendée ‘Rock on the Yon’ from the pre‐Latin
rocca ‘rock’ on the River Yon. Having been developed by Napoleon
† it was renamed ‘Napoleon in (the department of) Vendée’. After Napoleon's abdication in 1814 and flight to Elba it was renamed Bourbon‐Vendée after the Restoration of the House of Bourbon. Following Napoleon's return to France in 1815, the name Napoléon‐Vendée was restored. When he abdicated a second time after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo a few months later, Bourbon‐Vendée was readopted. Finally, after the advent of the Third Republic in 1870, the original name was revived.
