Kyzyl‐Orda (Qyzylorda or Quzylorda), Kazakhstan Ak‐Mechet, Perovsky, Fort Perovsk Founded in 1820 as a fort called Ak‐Mechet ‘White Mosque’ from
aq ‘white’ and
meshit ‘mosque’ in modern Kazakh. In 1853–1917 it was named after General Vasily Perovsky (1795–1857), the Russian commander of the force that captured the Kokandian settlement here in 1853. Ak‐Mechet was readopted in 1917–25. The present Kazakh name means ‘Red Fort’, literally ‘Red Horde’ from
kyzyl ‘red’ (here, in its revolutionary sense) and Turkic
ordu ‘camp’ or ‘army’. It served as the Kazakh capital between 1924 and 1929 until Alma‐Ata (now Almaty) took over because the Bolsheviks thought that Kyzyl‐Orda was too hot. The present name was adopted in 1925. It is also the name of a province.
