Kiritimati, Kiribati Christmas Island In the Line Islands, it was first sighted on Christmas Eve 1777 by Captain James Cook
†. It was annexed by the UK in 1888 and incorporated into the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony in 1919. Kiritimati is a local pronunciation of ‘Christmas’.
