Key West

Key West, Florida/USA Said to be an English version of the Spanish Cayo Hueso ‘Bone Islet’ from cayo ‘key’ or ‘islet’ and hueso ‘bone’, a consequence of Spanish explorers discovering human bones in the area. Equally plausible, however, is that the name comes from the Spanish cayo oeste ‘western islet’ since it is at the western end of the Florida Keys.
