Karakalpakstan (Qoraqalpoghiston), Uzbekistan An autonomous republic named after the Karakalpak, a Turkic people, to mean ‘Land of the Karakalpaks’. Their name ‘Black Caps’ is Turkic and is linked to modern Turkish
kara and
kapak ‘lid’ or ‘cover’, presumably a reference to their headgear. Having been established as an autonomous province of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1925, it was detached and became part of Russia in 1930. It was incorporated into the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic in 1936 and into Uzbekistan when it gained independence in 1991.
