Karachay‐Cherkessia (Karachayevo‐Cherkesiya), Russia A republic named after the Karachay and Circassian peoples, but they are not related linguistically. The Russian for Circassian is cherkes and this is said to come from an Ossetic word charkas ‘eagle’. They are also known as the Adygei (see Adygeya). The Karachay take their name from the Karachay River ‘Black Water’ from modern Turkish kara and çay ‘rivulet’ or ‘stream’. The two came together in 1922 to form an autonomous district, but were divided again in 1926. Accused of collaboration with the Germans during the Second World War, the Karachay were deported by Stalin in 1943–4 to Kazakhstan and their autonomous district was abolished. They were allowed back in 1957 when the Karachay‐Cherkessia autonomous district was re‐established. In 1991 the district became a republic.
